In the official medicine, maral root (Rhaponticum carthamoides Willd.) began to be used in 50-ies of the last century. In medicine, maral root preparations are used as tonic, similar in action to ginseng. The underground organs of the plant contain the sum of phytoecdysons, flavonoids, tannins, essential oil, resins, carotene, ascorbic acid, coumarins, organic acids. For medicinal purposes, rhizomes with roots are used. In culture, harvesting is carried out for 3-4 years after sowing, when the underground part reaches maximum development, but does not yet have dead roots. The biological activity of the plant is mainly related to the content of ecdysterone. Underground levzei organs have psychostimulating and adaptogenic properties, improve blood circulation, have a vasodilating effect, contributing to the regulation of blood pressure; increase the number of heart contractions. The plant has sugar-lowering properties. Infusion of flower baskets shows strongly pronounced anticoagulant properties. Preparations from maral root are effective for fatigue and loss of strength, increase mental performance and restore potency, help with treatment, depression, and are useful for cancer.
