Abstract. The article presents the results of an analytical study of the importance of uncertainty factors and risks (arising in the farming environment) for the effective functioning of farms. The structure of the work is such that, firstly, on the basis of a review analysis of the publications available on the topic, the differences between the concepts of "uncertainty" and "risks" are specified, and the current content of the risks occurring in agricultural activities is described in detail. Secondly, the paper presents the results of empirical studies (including those conducted on the materials of the Kurgan region – a traditional agricultural region of the Russian Federation) on the attitude of farmers to various risks that they face in the course of their farms functioning. Thirdly, the conclusion is given about the possibilities of modern farms to minimize (through organizational and technological innovations) the uncertainties and risks arising in the course of their activities, opening up promising (from an individual and social point of view) development trajectories.

Keywords: farming, environmental uncertainty, risks, technological innovations.
